What an online gift costs

Two fees apply to each online gift, and both are shown to the person giving before they give. Most people choose to cover them.

Stripe's processing fee

2.9% + 30¢ on cards and wallets. 2.2% + 30¢ at Stripe's nonprofit rate for 501(c)(3) organizations, which we help you request during setup.

Potluck's platform fee

0.75% of the gift. This is how the free plan stays free.

Cash and checks

Free. No fee to record them, no fee for the receipts or statements they appear on.

A $100 gift, worked out

Standard rateNonprofit rate
Stripe's fee$3.20$2.50
Potluck's fee$0.75$0.75
You receive if the giver does not cover fees$96.05$96.75
What the giver is asked to add to cover fees$4.10$3.35
You receive when they do$100.00$100.00

The amounts the giver sees are exact: the ask covers both fees on the grossed-up total, so you receive the round number they intended.

Questions about pricing

Do we need a card to start?

No. The free plan has no monthly fee, so there is nothing to put a card on. Stripe asks for a bank account so deposits have somewhere to go.

Is there a contract?

No. The paid plan is month to month and you can drop back to Free anytime.

Why a platform fee instead of a monthly fee?

A monthly fee is hard on a small budget in a slow month. A fee that scales with gifts, and that most givers cover, is not.
